The 4-H Program

4-H is America's largest extracurricular hands-on educational youth program.  No single Cooperative Extension Program is more recognized than 4-H.  The uniqueness of organizing boys and girls into clubs to help youth learn practical, educational and fun skills was one of the early hallmarks in education and it has succeeded greatly.

The tradition of excellence continues even in the large suburban count of Fairfax, where youth still participate in traditional projects such as poultry, livestock, and horses as well as newer projects including consumer education, public speaking, leadership, outdoor adventure, and computer technology.

The heart of the 4-H Program is the clubs.  Here the 4-H members, parents and local volunteers work together to form a community which strives to teach educational, recreational, personal, and leadership skills.

4-H meets the needs of today's youth in many ways including camps, nutrition and wellness programs, 4-H enrichment program in the schools, and countywide workshops such as Public Speaking with Toastmasters and the Veterinary Science Program with local veterinarians.  4-H also partners with many other organizations to bring programs and services to a wider, diverse population of youth.

4-H has stretched around the globe with international and overseas programs as well as interstate exchanges.  Many nations have developed youth programs similar to 4-H and benefited from the concept.
